The "Best Man Holiday" actor's rep confirmed the surprising news about the longtime couple and parents of 4-year-old son Walker to omg!.
"Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs have jointly decided to separate at this time," the statement read. "Their primary focus and concern is for their son. We ask that you respect their privacy during this time."
Menzel, a Tony Award-winning singer and actress, and Diggs wed in January 2003 after meeting when they were co-stars in the original Broadway musical "Rent" in 1996.
The news is shocking because the gorgeous pair, both 42, seemed to still be so in love and quite romantic. Just last month, Menzel revealed during an appearance on "Live With Kelly and Michael" that Diggs courted her by leaving "sexy" notes in her "Rent" dressing room. And after the handsome actor chased down an intruder at their home as they returned from the Screen Actors Guild Awards back in January, the "Glee" guest star explained that it only made her love him more.
"I was frustrated with him for doing it," she told People in April. "But his instinct came in — his child and wife were in the house — so afterward it was sexy to me."
Diggs often spoke just as fondly of his wife. In an October 2012 interview with Theater Mania, the actor gushed about how the birth of his son had been good for the marriage.
"Seeing Idina as a mother has had a wonderfully positive effect," he said. "There aren't many things that are sexier than just watching the bond that exists between her and Walker — seeing their similarities when they're together, and all the parts of her that I love the most."
The marriage was the first for both.
