Becoming a mom for the first time is an experience pregnant Kelly Clarkson eagerly awaits, but she’s had practice being a stepmom to hubby Brandon Blackstock’s kids Savannah, 11, and Seth, 7.
“I’ve basically been one for, like, a year,” the sunny singer, 31, tells me during a Green Mountain Coffee Fair Trade event in NYC. “I love it. I always felt like I was a good aunt, because I’ve always been around my nieces and nephews, so it’s nice.”
She continues, “It is a very selfless job, being a parent, but it’s also pretty rewarding, to be a part of it.”
The Grammy winner can count on her hubby to help out with daddy duties because he already knows what to expect.
“He’s up earlier than me,” she says. “I’m going to own that. He takes his kids to school. It’s like 6:30 a.m. when he wakes up. I am not up then!”
One thing Kelly is grateful for is that their lil’ one will live a comfortable lifestyle.
She admits that growing up, she didn’t see her whole family at the holidays “because we were so poor, and everybody lived far away, like legitimately L.A., North Carolina and Texas.”
How has money changed things for her?
“People always say ‘money doesn’t solve everything,’” she says. “Well, it solves a whole hell of a lot. Yeah. It does, which is nice. I don’t have to worry, and my family doesn’t have to worry about financial times being hard for them.”
She continues,“That’s nice—that makes me feel good, because we have struggled our whole lives before this, as a lot of people do. I actually love where I came from as well, just because I get that, and I have a bit more compassion maybe than others, because I’ve been there, but the financial part is really, really helpful.”
Being pregnant, her body is changing, which is something she doesn’t mind—especially because her weight has fluctuated over the years.
“I love it,” she says. “I love my body. I’ve always sort of been that kid. I’m always rocking something different, whatever the year is. I love it! I think that’s the one thing that you should be really happy with yourself.”
No matter what the scale says, Kelly believes “confidence is the most sexy thing ever.”
She adds, “Whether it’s an actress or model, it’s not really the size or even the beauty,” she says. “Some people are sometimes very breathtaking, but it’s more the confidence and their air—the way they walk in the room, and the way they fit in their skin. The way they’re comfortable in it. That’s how I’ve always been since I was a young kid.”
