MURDER: Woman Jailed for Setting Her 9-Year-Old Housemaid Ablaze

A Yaba Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos ruled on December 17, 2013, Tuesday that a woman, identified as Nkese Iroakazi, who allegedly murdered and set ablaze a nine-year-old housemaid, identified as Eno Bassey, had a case to answer.
Yewande Aje-Afunwam, the Chief Magistrate, gave the ruling at the resumed hearing of the case following a report by the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
She said that the DPP’s report showed that a prima facie case had been established against the accused.
Felix Ifijen, on the side of the prosecution, had told the court that Ms. Iroakasi set ablaze the housekeeper, Bassey, on July 27 at her residence, No. 7 Adeniran Ogunsanya, Surulere, Lagos. The Prosecutor added Bassey suffered severe burns and died a week later at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital. He noted that the offence contravened Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The case was in August adjourned pending the DPP’s report, while the accused was remanded in prison.
