The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Lagos chapter, Karo Ogbinaka has said that the disagreement between university teachers and the Federal Government dates back to the military regime of Olusegun Obasanjo.
Mr Ogbinaka, who disclosed this while being interviewed in Channels Television's programme, Sunrise Daily, said if the union relent now, whatever gains it has achieved, would be lost.
He said, "As at 2009 the agreement was signed, it was an agreement that started since when Obasanjo was Head of states. The federal government was moving to Abuja and a lot of government properties were wasting away. It was thought that if it were giving to the universities they'll be able to generate fund from that.
"But I'll want to say not much can be achieved in that direction because most of these properties are either wasted away terribly, like the federal secretariat in Lagos or someway along the line they've turned around to buy most of those properties off themselves."
